Alma records his own sermons to members of the churches in Zerahemla, where they are suffering from pride and contentions within the church, and in Gideon, where things are going better. In Zerahemla, Alma focuses his message on helping the members have a “mighty change of heart,” which is to repent and turn from the things of the world to putting Christ as a priority in your lives. Those that chose to not repent have their names removed from the records of the church. In Gideon, he focuses his message on the mission and ministry of Christ, and His condescension to our level so that He can understand and ultimately take upon Himself our weaknesses, preparing us to return to the presence of The Father.
